Tips To Ensure Customer Satisfaction With The Cleanliness Of Your Retail Space

|January 28, 2021

Customer satisfaction goes way beyond just the satisfaction (or lack thereof) of a customer with your product(s) or service(s). Especially now, where personal and public hygiene are more important than ever before, your retail space is responsible for much of the customer experience.

And make no mistake, your customers don’t just want a quality product or good service, they want to be taken care of by you and your business. That means a clean and tidy retail space. If you need some inspiration, follow these tips to ensure your customers are satisfied with the cleanliness of your retail space:

Personal Hygiene

Apart from the mask mandate, many retail stores have opted to install hand sanitizer dispensers just inside every entrance. This is not only a good sign for incoming customers, but it actually engages customers to practice good personal hygiene when walking in.

You may also consider positioning one of your staff at each entrance to greet customers while disinfecting any hand-held baskets or shopping carts (if applicable). This is a simple way to proactively clean the pieces of your retail space that are critical to the customer experience, while also associating positive sentiments through warm greetings.

Don’t Forget the Restrooms

It isn’t uncommon for retailers to maintain a clean store and forget about the routine maintenance of their bathrooms. As people warm up to using public facilities again, nothing could be more of a customer satisfaction killer than needing to use the bathroom and finding it unpleasant.

Setting a schedule for routine cleaning of your bathrooms may not be enough. The key is to set a reminder either for you or one of your staff to clean the bathroom, or for you or one of your staff to at least check on the status of the scheduled cleaning.

Dusting, Dusting, Dusting

Your customers may not know it, but dust is more than just an unsightly thing that shouldn’t be seen in a retail space. For the sake of your customers’ health, dusting should be one of your top cleaning priorities.

To enhance customer satisfaction, think about putting signs up around your retail space asking that customers report any visible dust to your staff for cleaning. If they ask why, first dust off the affected areas in front of them, and then explain that dust can carry airborne viruses like COVID-19. That will show your customers that you and your staff really care about their health.

Disinfect High Traffic Surfaces

You or one of your employees should routinely disinfect high traffic surfaces using the appropriate sanitary equipment. Think of the cost of time as an investment in customer satisfaction.

Not only will your retail space look and be cleaner, but your customers will appreciate your doing so, and this can only serve to benefit your business. Besides, it’s a good hygiene habit.
