Areas to Keep Clean in Your Gym
|April 14, 2023
Gyms come in all different shapes and sizes; some may be intense crossfit gyms, others quiet rooms for yoga, and some even private makeshift at home gyms. No matter where you go to workout, there is one thing all gyms have in common- they accumulate dirt. Here are some of the most important areas to keep clean in your workout space:
Mats
Mats are used with almost any kind of workout. Whether it is yoga, lifting, or a cardio workout, mats are a great way to add a layer of cushion between you and the floor. Mats collect everything and everything that occurs during a workout: dirt from shoes, natural body oils, sweat, and more. Unfortunately, these mats are not always properly cleaned and disinfected afterwards. Be sure to clean your mats before and after use, especially if you are in a public gym!
Dumbbells
Dumbbells are extremely versatile and a popular workout equipment for good reason. However, when people are constantly touching dumbbells, they can easily become covered in germs that will be spread from one person to the next. Dumbbells often also sit on racks that accumulate dust and dirt if not regularly cleaned. Take the extra minute it takes to wipe down the dumbbells and dumbbell racks you use.
Cardio Equipment
Machines like treadmills are used for walking, running, and sprints. All of these exercises work up a sweat, and this sweat can easily fall onto the machines without being properly cleaned afterwards. Some other cardio machines like stationary bikes have a lot of contact points with those using it, allowing all of the sweat, natural oils, and germs to transfer from the person, to the bike, and back to the next person that uses it.
Water Fountains
Public gyms almost always have water fountains that are heavily used each day. This is a popular and necessary utility in a gym, making it a high traffic place where germs can spread. It only takes one person’s mouth or dirty hand touching the water dispenser to compromise the cleanliness of the water fountain.
Your Own Gym Bag
Sometimes your own bag full of all of your stuff is your last place you’d think to keep clean. Think about all of the stuff in your bag: a water bottle, your earbuds, extra gym equipment, and maybe even a spare pair of shoes. All of these things probably come into contact with you or the gym space around you and are then thrown right back into your bag. These items create a mess of sweat, germs, and stench that can easily be overlooked when cleaning. Yuck!
