Your Carpet Can Contain All Categories of Contaminants!
|September 28, 2020
When it comes to choosing the perfect floor for your facility, there are many options, and the best choice depends solely on your preferences and what you feel comfortable handling on an ongoing basis for maintenance. Some floors can be beautiful, but require more effort than you may be willing to invest to keep in pristine condition – such as hardwoods, or some stones. Other floors – like tile or carpet – can be much more low maintenance, while still looking beautiful or bringing the exact aesthetic you desire. For some, tile is a great choice because it’s very easy to clean and extremely durable, but for others, the constant feeling of coolness or hardness can feel unwelcoming, and remove it from the list of considerations. Carpet can be the epitome of warm and welcoming, making your space feel cozy and inviting to all who visit. That said, it’s important to understand how to properly care for your carpet, and how to keep it clean for you and your loved ones. Carpet can actually contain all categories of contaminants, so here’s a list of what you can expect, and how to manage them as best as possible for a healthy and beautiful environment.
Pesticides and chemicals
This may seem like a strange one to think about being in your carpet, but unfortunately it’s true. Carpet is warm and welcoming, and perfect for sitting and living in comfort, mostly due to how soft and absorbent it is. That same quality that makes it so cozy and inviting, however, also makes it more likely to attract and harbor contaminants brought in from the outside. It’s all too easy for dirt that is contaminated with bug sprays, pesticides, paint, and other chemicals to find their way inside by hitchhiking in on your shoes, feet, and clothing. Once they find their way in, they settle onto your floor, blankets, pillows, and towels. The latter items are easy to run through the wash, but many people don’t consider how their floors are impacted by everyday activity, and how important it is to not skip regular deep cleanings.
Dust mites
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that are essentially small bugs, and they’re notorious for infesting areas like carpets, bedding, mattresses, upholstery, curtains, and more. Dust mites don’t bite, but they do leave behind microscopic waste in the form of fecal matter and shed skin. This waste is easy for inhabitants and visitors of your business to inhale, which can cause irritation, allergies, and is even linked to asthma. Children are usually more susceptible than adults, as they are more likely to spend time on the ground or put their face closer to curtains and furniture. To kill dust mites, use a heat of over 130 degrees fahrenheit, or use a special treatment to liberally apply to all areas they may be infesting.
Pets
Pets are beloved additions to the workplace, and usually considered part of the team. This is for great reason, as pets can truly be bundles of joy, but they do live very different lives than their human companions. Pets are a prime culprit when it comes to tracking in all kinds of nasty toxins, contaminants, and even pests like fleas or bugs. Plus, if your pet isn’t completely house-trained yet – or recently went through the process – it’s very likely there is excrement from feces and urine embedded in your carpet fibers. Again, a deep cleaning is the way to go to resolve most of these concerns, so you and your pets can enjoy a clean and healthy home.
All of these contaminants that can cling and absorb to carpet are normal, but a regular vacuum cleaning won’t do the trick. The good news is that a thorough deep cleaning – which you can do yourself with rented equipment, or hire a professional team like ours to knock out for you – is sure to restore your floors back to beautiful, comfortable, and most importantly – clean – for you and all your loved ones to enjoy.
